Mercy’s so beautiful that it’s been a distraction during this entire ordeal. I say ordeal because picking out a Christmas tree is no small feat, even though my brother and I are huge, strapping men.

“That one!” she cried, pointing to a seven-footer in the corner of the lot. “No that one!” she squealed, spinning around and gesturing to a huge ten-foot tree with branches that had to be at least five feet across.

“Sweetheart, we’re happy to get you any tree you like, but are you sure that’ll fit in your trailer?” asks Drake, looking skeptically at the monster. “The way I see it, this one’s going to be bent over at the tip if you put it up in your living room. The star will be leaning over sideways, like this,” he says, bending at the waist and holding out his arms at a ninety-degree angle.

“No, silly, this is for you because it’s going in your apartment,” she says with a giggle. “You have a big place, right? It’ll fit just fine in the corner.”

The truth is that my brother and I share an enormous apartment over on the west side of town. It was easy to build something to our liking because we own the entire building, and when we purchased it, we decided to renovate one of the apartments for ourselves. So what we did was take three units, and we combined them into one giant, spacious area. When Mercy saw it for the first time, she gasped while twirling around in the living room.

“Oh my god, look at all this space!” she squealed, her blonde hair flying out in an arc. “This is such luxury!”

I laugh, entranced by the beautiful girl.

“It’s even better with you here,” I growl.

“You add so much magic to our living room,” added my brother.

Mercy merely smiled again and shimmied a bit.

“We have to get a tree for this space.”

“Of course,” I rumbled in return. “We’ll do it in the next couple of days.”

I thought she’d forget, but Mercy has a brain like a steel trap. She remembered, and sure enough, dragged us over to a lot on the edge of town which was selling trees of all sizes. Finally, we settled on a fifteen foot tree, although to be honest, once we dragged it into our living room, it looked a little bit too small for the space.

“Hmm,” said Mercy, staring up at the top. “It looks kind of puny here, don’t you think? Maybe we should have gotten a bigger one.”

I put my foot down.

“Sweetheart, we were at that tree lot for two hours selecting a Christmas tree, and it was friggin’ cold. We are not going back to exchange this tree for another one. If anything, I got frostbite from being out there so long.”

Mercy merely giggles while looking at me.

“Oh, is that so?” she asks, looking adorable with her pink cheeks and red sweater. She’s wearing a red and white Santa hat for fun, and it only highlights her glowing complexion and holiday spirit.
